Gr 6-8–Jim Hawkins is working at his family’s inn when a strange pirate named Billy Bones appears and decides to stay there. Due to unhealthy drinking habits, Billy is not in the best of health, and when another pirate confronts him, he has a stroke. Concerned that he’s now been found out, Billy warns Jim that he may be summoned, and gives Jim instructions, pointing out an old chest the pirates may be after. After Billy dies, Jim and his mother open the chest, uncovering a map to Treasure Island. Local landowner Squire Trelawny quickly sets up an expedition to find the treasure, making Jim a cabin boy for the ensuing adventure. This Korean manga adaptation of Stevenson’s
Treasure Island is inconsistent at best. The character artwork contrasts with the backgrounds, while character descriptions and appearances feel disconnected. The language stems from the classic novel, which hinders readability for a younger, modern audience.
VERDICT While it may have limited use if the original classic is a required read, this adaptation is not likely to generate its own audience. Not recommended.
