Miles to Go

PreS-Gr 1—Leading Mom and aware that his horn is broken, Miles zigzags and zooms along the sidewalks. Propelling his yellow race car with his feet, the youngster just misses a "four-wheeler" (stroller) before tunneling through a row of hedges to get to school. Other kids show up in their own vehicles, too: a pink convertible, a blue sports car, and his friend Otto on a green motorbike. After school, in a spirit of true camaraderie, Otto helps Miles fix his horn by holding the flashlight. The instructive endpapers map the route from his red two-story house, past the house with a fence and bulldog, the mailbox, the big puddle, across the street, and so on. The kid-friendly illustrations combine block printing with cut-paper collage. Miles himself is decked out in a shirt printed with snippets of the map of Boston.
