Gr 1–4—This collection of three short movies, each about 25 minutes long, follows the "My Little Pony" characters back into an alternate version of Equestria, where they become girls with magical powers. The first episode, "Dance Magic," finds the girls trying to win a dance contest, with a rival group stealing their routine. The focus is mostly on dance moves and costumes, though it does end with a lesson in cooperation. "Movie Magic" unfolds like a Scooby-Doo–style whodunit with hilarious movie-related hijinks and chase scenes. Lastly, "Mirror Magic" continues from the previous episode, with the villain finding a way to trap the girls in a mirror. Luckily, Starlight Glimmer is there to teach the importance of friendship and the drawbacks of fame. Educational value is limited, but the girls serve as decent role models in their ability to stay optimistic, work together, and value each other.
VERDICT Campy and colorful fun with some laughs and a lot of heart. For public libraries.
