Readers are introduced to the young girl’s grandmother, Amelia, and to Amelia’s memory, named Roberta. The girl and Abuela plan various adventures trying to catch Roberta, who left Abuela one day. When they finally capture Roberta, the memory encourages the girl and her grandmother to live in the present and enjoy themselves while making new memories together. Roberta notes that she will be back to visit, which is in line with Alzheimer’s patients. The whimsical illustrations show the grandmother and granddaughter having fun before and after capturing Roberta, while also showing the grandmother exercising, which helps her brain.
VERDICT A unique way of approaching Alzheimer’s that will allow adults to share and talk about this illness with young readers who may know someone living with it.
