Gr 1-2–When her best friend Emily Rose moves away, Paloma’s heart is broken. She is lost in a sea of sadness, thinking about Emily Rose during the day and dreaming of her friend at night. One morning when her older sister, who is always on her cell phone, is babysitting her, they are out walking their dog Bucket. Bucket notices a boy they have never seen before pulling a wagon with a cat curled up inside. The boy’s name is Noah, and he offers Bucket a ride in his wagon. Bucket jumps in, curls up to Mitzvah, and quickly falls asleep. A friendship based on community is born. This is a delightful story of the richness of kindness, diversity, and community, and overcoming grief. The author highlights two words from the Jewish faith that represent respect and performing good deeds for others.
VERDICT Not an essential purchase, this could be a nice addition to the SEL shelves or those covering the pitfalls of losing a friend.
