Nothing Ever Happens

Scholastic/Orchard. Aug. 2025. 32p. PreS-K
PreS-K–Every day looks the same for two fishy companions in the sea. Being surrounded by perpetually unchanging flora and fauna can feel boring at times, and the friends lament the fact that nothing exciting ever happens to them. However, the fish quickly discover that it is important to carefully consider what they wish for when an unexpected adventure inadvertently takes them where they never intended to go. This comical picture book is well suited for reading aloud to very young children. Using few words and a repetitive structure, the narrative leaves room for storytellers to interpret the pictures and discuss the plot with children. The illustrations are the primary focus of the book, featuring a select few sea creatures who exhibit anthropomorphic characteristics while existing in their natural environments. Tongue-in-cheek humor will keep readers engaged in the story, especially as text and imagery often contradict one another. While the color of the type occasionally can be difficult to read against the background hues, the narrative is brief enough to be accessible to most readers. Fans of I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean! will enjoy similar themes in this book.
VERDICT Fun and clever, Nothing Ever Happens is a charming addition to collections, especially those intended for very young children. Grades Pre-K
