Ponyo Film Comic All-in-One Edition

Gr 4-7–A young ocean princess sneaks away from her sorcerer father and finds herself in the world of humans, specifically in the hands of five-year-old Sosuke. Sosuke dubs his new find “Ponyo” and promises to take care of her, but the ocean and its caretaker want their daughter back. After her taste of the human world, Ponyo will stop at nothing to return and assumes human form, to the horror of her father. This lighthearted and whimsical take on the Little Mermaid story will delight younger readers but may have adults asking about the ramifications of Ponyo’s choices. These all-in-one manga adaptations of Miyazaki’s classic films take stills from the movies and convert them to the comic format, and at times, the wordless scenes flounder without the context of the movie. The essence of the story is here, providing an inroad to a new generation, but this book is best enjoyed by those who have seen the movie at least once.
