K-Gr 4—In this animated production, viewers see the world through the eyes of a blind child. Matt, a self-described "Super Private Eye," wakes up on the day before his birthday with a mission: find his hidden present. Being vision impaired doesn't slow the boy down. Matt's parents will only tell him that the gift is soft and warm. He fantasizes about it in school, even when reading his Braille book. On the day of his birthday, Matt's family drives into the country where Matt chooses the most beautiful puppy in the litter using his non-traditional eyes. The cartoon animation uses white lines on black background to help sighted viewers imagine Matt's world; eyes appear on his hands, feet, and ears. Color is used to suggest what sighted people would see. This purposeful but engaging short film introduces numerous concepts in child-like, appealing animation and narration. Detailed lesson plans can be downloaded from the producer's website (nfb.ca). The film's soundtrack is available in both English and French, and there's a "descriptive video" function for the visually impaired. Brief and engaging, this 2012 ALSC Notable production will find audiences in both schools and public libraries.—
