2–Each spring, a boulder perched high on a ledge calls down to a cactus below, asking if it’s in bloom. Boulder longs to see Cactus’s flowers up close, but every year its attempts to reach the desert floor have failed. Still, Boulder insists, “Today will be the day,” and Cactus replies, “I can’t wait!” Luckily for these two friends, and for young readers, neither can Rabbit. With the help of a tiny butterfly, they set out to make Boulder’s wish come true. What starts as a quiet act of kindness grows into a group effort, complete with an entire fleet of rabbits. Through some creative thinking and true community spirit, Boulder and Cactus might get the encounter they have been waiting for. Told through understated text, the true heart of the story unfolds in the illustrations. Readers will revel in the visual storytelling, where much of the plot and humor reside. Gentle wordplay (feat/feet, boulder/bolder) adds an extra layer of delight and discussion potential. The mixed media digital illustrations are soft and textured, with a warm pastel skyscape that complements the tender and playful tone. Though the rabbits are not central to the dialogue, their silent determination speaks volumes. Suited for read-alouds, this is a subtle, effective story about collaboration, kindness, and creative problem-solving.
VERDICT An excellent purchase for story times focused on teamwork, empathy, and the power of quiet determination.
