Gr 5 Up—Schatz has selected one woman for each letter of the alphabet to be recognized for her radical thinking and willingness to stand up for tolerance or represent women in a positive light. All of these women have "shattered the glass ceiling" and led the way for other women to be successful. The book is honest and insightful. The subjects are old, young, black, white, Hispanic, heterosexual, gay, and transgender. Younger listeners will appreciate the melodic tone of the readers, while older listeners will understand and appreciate the message. The narration alternates between two readers, both of whom have powerful voices and effectively convey the impact of these radical women. The short snippets keep the pace going.
VERDICT For those looking for ways to teach tolerance and celebrate the accomplishments of women. ["Classes across the curriculum can utilize this informative book": SLJ 2/15 review of the City Lights book.]
