Gr 2-6–Fearless sixth grader Sawyer is back for another shape-shifting adventure. What begins as a harmless prank of turning into a spider to help his sister get over her fear quickly spirals into a mission to save the city’s stray dogs. After a near-miss with his sister’s cat, Sawyer transforms into a dog and discovers the mayor’s plan to impound all strays. Now, Sawyer must use his quick thinking and secret power to rescue the innocent puppies before it’s too late. This short, action-packed graphic novel is an excellent choice for emerging and developing readers. Sawyer is a relatable hero who stands up for those who can’t speak for themselves while helping even the bad guys learn a better way. Readers will also enjoy watching Sawyer and his sister Stacey develop a relationship built on trust. The cartoon-style illustrations match the humor and energy of the story, and a “words to know” section at the front of the book supports new readers as they build confidence.
