PreS-Gr 1–Schaefer, of the “Mittens” early reader series, adds to the Ready-to-Read collection with this action-filled tale for fans of rockets and space. The story follows a rocket that is trying to make its way to the launch pad to lift off but runs into some trouble along the way. Introductory materials include sight words and other words to practice before reading. The text is classified as Ready-to-Read’s ‘Ready-to-Go’ level, which is for the most beginning readers featuring the -ace and -all word families. There are only a few words on each page, repeating words, and rhyming words. Parrish’s illustrations are vibrant, with bold, bright jewel tones and colorful, collage-style patterns elements. Unfortunately, the art can be difficult to interpret, which will add to the challenge of reading for new readers who may be looking for clues in the imagery. Since the text is also limited to a few words on each spread, the plot is truly open to interpretation, as the images can feel unclear.
VERDICT A secondary purchase that would work well for building out a rocket book display but may be a bit challenging for beginning readers.
