Gr 9 Up—Sand is everywhere in our lives—in glass, building materials, vehicles, electronics, even cosmetics—and it is being stolen, wasted, and exploited. Facts are clearly presented, while graphics help illustrate points and processes in this eye-opening documentary about a resource most people don't think very much about, described here as "the most used commodity in the world." The uses of sand in construction, road building, and beach replenishment in diverse parts of the world—United Arab Emirates, India, Morocco, Florida, and France—illustrate how much this resource is at risk. Scientists, activists, workers in the sand trade, and victims of the industries exploiting sand offer both sides of the issue. The greed and corruption influencing illegal sand stealing operations are explained. The activities of pirates and mafias, environmental degradation, destruction of local livelihoods, and the danger to low-lying islands and coastlines are highlighted. Rising sea levels will only exacerbate these problems. Suggestions for alternative materials and community and grassroots groups fighting back against environmental damage allow the film to end on a mildly hopeful note. Disturbing and informative, this film will spark discussion in science, social studies, industrial arts, and other classes.—
