Gr 4-6–Learn alongside the pupils of the London Academy of Ideas and Ingenuity in this debut series featuring S.T.E.A.M. topics. A field trip to the academy’s stables sets off an adventure for Thea, George, and Toot, an alien exchange student from the planet Cancri. Thea has no experience with horses, while George has been riding for years. As he introduces Thea and Toot to his own horse, George also explains somethings related to horses in general. The graphic novel format makes it easy to include images like a neatly labeled diagram of a horse, a close-up showing the internal anatomy of a horse’s foot and hoof, or pictures of various styles of saddles and stirrups. Toot uses advanced technology to take the group into the past to see early ancestors of horses, or to shrink them down so they can explore inside a horse’s nervous system. Other topics they cover include uses for horses throughout history, careers that involve horses, and famous horses from history and entertainment. An introductory letter from an equine expert and a helpful glossary are also included. Thea and George both have brown skin, and dark hair.
VERDICT A good purchase for collections that can’t keep horse books on the shelf, and where “Science Comics” or “Max Axiom” titles are in high demand.
