Stick Dog Meets Poo-Poo

K-Gr 2–Watson’s children’s book characters make the leap to the graphic novel format, bringing Stick Dog’s familiar humor along with them. After waking up under a bridge, Stick Dog wanders to the local park looking for breakfast. Instead of finding food, he meets a pink poodle named Poo-Poo, who isn’t the most street-savvy dog. When looking for food, Poo-Poo walks right past a bursting trash can, instead trying to eat a bicycle tire, ­water tower, and more. Stick Dog and ­Poo-Poo become fast friends when a stinky garbage bag reveals some yummy surprises. The recognizable stick-figure art style will appeal to a younger audience, and early elementary students can easily copy the artwork to create their own adventures. The background art reflects the simple styling of the two main pups and fleshes out the new formatting necessary to transfer Stick Dog from a chapter book to a graphic novel. While the storyline isn’t too memorable, these adventures will be sought after by early readers who are curious about, but not quite ready for “Dog Man” and “Cat Kid.”
