PreS-K—Young Wellington is a perseverant penguin fascinated with flowers. He tells his friends that he is going to grow a garden, but they are quick to let him know that it is impossible for flowers to survive in the snow and cold. He is not deterred, however. Inspired by the shiny wrapper from his cookie, he decides to make a magical garden from colorful wrappers, buttons, seashells, etc. The garden looks great, everyone agrees. That night, though, a storm blows in and ruins everything. Undaunted, Wellington creates another magical garden, and this time animals from all over the world come to admire it. The brightly colored characters and the garden are set against a snowy landscape with igloos in the background. Children will appreciate Wellington's easy-to-read expressions and body language, determination, and willingness to believe in the impossible. Overall, the story presents a positive message about pursuing one's desires despite challenges.—
Emily E. Lazio, The Smithtown Special Library District, NYIn this cheery, didactic story, Wellington the penguin longs for a garden. Unfortunately, he lives in perpetual winter, so growing flowers is not an option. Still determined, he decides to make his garden out of shiny food wrappers, buttons, seashells, and more. The eye-catching but splashy pink-and-purple result is reminiscent of Candy Land, exacerbating the sugary-sweet text.
