PreS-Gr 1–This book explains our galaxy to the youngest science and space enthusiasts. The text is simple, with a few harder scientific terms explained in the glossary at the front of the book. Readers learn that any star they are able to see at night is part of the Milky Way. Bauer relates excellently the vast size of space and galaxies to things that a young child can understand: “If our Sun was smaller than a grain of sand, the Milky Way would span all of North America. Our galaxy is that big!” Beautifully hand-sketched drawings complement the text, showing how our galaxy is spiral in shape and comparing it to a pinwheel. Terms, such as nebulae and black hole, are briefly introduced for those readers who may be curious and want to explore the galaxy further. Space is a common topic for children to be interested in, and this book makes it easily understandable for the youngest of readers.
VERDICT Recommended for general purchase for early reader collections.–Kristen Todd-Wurm
