Gr 7 Up—Pollan here invites listeners to become food detectives. He asserts that most of what families eat and buy in a grocery store comes from corn. This statement is supported with examples from personal experiences and one-on-one interviews with farmers, scientists, and professors. Listeners will learn exactly what products, both edible and inedible, are made with corn, the number one crop in the United States today. Corn, he says, is even fed to cattle, despite the fact that it's not a good food source for them. In fact, it can make them deathly ill. Corn-fed cattle, which most people think is the best to buy and eat, is explained as being far from beneficial. Narrator MacLeod Andrews does an excellent job of delivering each short chapter, pausing before and after the chapter title or topic. Tips for eating and buying real food are included in this edition.
VERDICT Recommended for students interested in the food industry, farming, or what Americans eat. ["Will appeal to thoughtful, socially responsible teens": SLJ 10/09 review of the Dial book.]
