K-Gr 3—The self-appointed quartet of commando-protectors of the Central Park Zoo is kept busy by ridiculous situations in these eight humorous animated episodes: "Paternal Egg-stinct," "Hard Boiled Eggy," "April Fools," "Siege the Day," "Operation Neighbor Swap," "Otter Gone Wild," "Two Feet High and Rising," and "Sting Operation." Lemur King Julien is often the foil to the penguins along with his devotees, Maurice and Mort. The preponderance of classic cartoon-style violence and the level of humor make this a popular choice for school-age children. The penguins frequently create elaborate inventions using unlikely components acquired mysteriously, often regurgitated by Kowalski. Several episodes feature Ducky, born from a lost egg, who is put into penguin training. In "April Fools Day," King Julien sets out to make up for all the pranks he failed to carry out in the past. In "Sting Operation," it is surprising that Mort is made fun of because of his low intelligence. The penguins' large fan base will welcome this fun addition to the canon.—Constance Dickerson, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH
