Gr 3–6—Budding chemists and their teachers will find this series quite informative. The text alternates with images to break the presentation into digestible chunks. Captions with each image offer additional facts to extend the topic. For instance, on the page illustrating various bonds, readers learn, "All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds!" Photos are clear and relate directly to the text. Other graphics are well labeled for easy identification. The image of a geyser with water and steam spraying out is a wonderful example from
States of Matter, and the book goes beyond solids, liquids, and gases to discuss plasma as the fourth state. The information is divided between the books so that one can build onto the next—
Atoms, then
Molecules, and so on—but the texts also work well independently.
VERDICT Solid coverage of each topic makes this a helpful reference series.
