Gr 2-5–This bright and colorful book is so detailed in its coverage of musical history that it could be used as a college textbook, but it is constructed in a way that makes it ideal for children. The thick glossy pages and large photos with equally interesting text boxes will hold readers’ attention. Six chapters divide musical history into easily digestible sections that range from ancient history to current music. The introduction explains how to use the book and lists any neat features (“Listen Up” suggests essential songs to listen to online and “Behind the Notes” discusses music science). Each chapter also features frequently used instruments of the era, musical terms, and popular venues. The book describes music and instruments from different cultures (K-Pop, Sitars, Indi-pop). The only drawback is that the text only features artists through 2016. An index, a glossary, resources, further reading, and a musical history time line are included.
VERDICT This impressively diverse musical history book is perfect for any library, especially where NatGeoKids books are popular.
