Gr 9 Up–There’s not much going on in the second semester of senior year for Olive, so she decides to take a week off before spring break to surprise her college-age boyfriend, Jack, at his school in Hawaii. Olive is afraid that Jack is cheating. On the flight, Olive is seated next to her ex, Tyler, whom she dumped—but she regrets breaking his heart. While Tyler flies by the seat of his pants, Olive has turned into a control freak who yearns for stability. As the story unfolds, Olive evolves into a dynamic character and learns to reconnect with Tyler as well as her flighty mother. She also repairs her relationship with her best friend, Delia, but does not tend to herself as dearly. Cozzi highlights some off-the-beaten-path date locales in Oahu. The story includes strong language, drinking, and a scene of protected sex. Main characters cue white; Delia identifies as LGBTQIA+.
VERDICT A gentle YA romance.
