Gr 9 Up—This textbook-style compilation of essays and biographies has solid information. Unfortunately, the format is where it fails. In her introduction, it is clear that Marie wanted everyone to fully appreciate the unsung females in the gaming world. This ambitious undertaking would have worked better in a series of smaller books with a more legible font size. The Table of Contents is organized by decade. There are four additional mini Table of Contents sections that are broken down by Profiles, A Day in the Life of, Essays, and In Their Own Words. The introduction, cleverly entitled "Tutorial," guides readers through the many gaming terms introduced throughout the text. Each profile is broken down by a pixilated picture of each woman with a quick bio, which includes Experience, Stats, Equipment, and Easter Egg. A Day in the Life of, Essays, and In Their Own Words sections are scattered throughout the book in no discernible order. The websites and social media handles for each featured woman will make this title outdated very quickly.
VERDICT An uneven volume that feels like multiple books were thrown together to make one. Wait for something more reader-friendly on this topic. Stick with books like Girls Who Rocked the World for strong collective biographies on women in the meantime.
