Toddler-PreS–It is a typical day at school where friends Paisley the octopus, Mateo the red panda, Layla the llama, Mia the monkey, Riley the narwhal, and Elijah the elephant are having a day full of emotions and feelings. Paisley feels sad when she spills her snacks, but she is all happy when Mateo shares his. Riley feels frustrated that he is unable to keep his block tower from falling, but Elijah places the blocks back, and Riley feels calm. This book of emotions would suit a story hour with toddlers about feelings and opposites. Young children will engage with the story as they identify the emotions highlighted in the straightforward narrative. The digitally made full-spread illustrations are set on a white background and come to life with expressive animal characters clothed and accessorized in bright colors. The medium-size black text is interspersed with color-coded words for the feelings. As emotions rule this book, so does the notion that it is all right to feel them and find ways to manage when things do not work out as expected.
VERDICT A book where young children’s emotions come to life as familiar and part of life.
