A Time Traveler’s History of Tomorrow

Gr 9 Up–Genevieve is a science prodigy at a time when women are unwelcome in the field. She is motivated by bitterness and the need to prove herself. Her feeling of being unseen by society, the academic community, and her family are manifested through her ability to turn invisible. Ash is fleeing a sheltered, cultish upbringing, using his ability to go back in time to survive and manage relationships. They encounter each other at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair, where Ash saves Genevieve’s life as her physics project explodes but throws them back in time to 1893. Together, they must find a way to prevent the apocalyptic catastrophe and return to their own times, while unexpectedly falling in love. Genevieve and Ash are flawed characters who experience growth. Social class, gender, and racial discrimination of the time are threaded throughout. The dual narrative style, switching between Genevieve and Ash, may be appealing for some readers or confuse others. Genevieve is described as having short, red-blonde hair and blue eyes, and Ash as having light skin and dirty blonde hair.
