Gr 1-4–A heartrending historical fiction series entry for the chapter book crowd. Chen and his family are Chinese Americans who have settled in San Francisco despite the many racist immigration policies that were present in 1906. However, when the disastrous earthquake occurs, he and his sister get separated from the parents and must confront many obstacles to survive the catastrophe’s aftermath. The narrative captures the anxieties of being separated from family in a dangerous situation with relevance and sensitivity. The author doesn’t shy away from tough topics, such as acts of racism and prejudice from soldiers, hints of marital issues between Chen’s parents, and possible deportation. This short volume boasts excellent pacing and characterization; the immediacy is palpable. Even though the book ends with some heartbreak, the conclusion is ultimately hopeful. Black-and-white line drawings support the text. Tips for instructors and parents about morphology and root words are found in the front matter. Discussion questions are featured in the back matter, along with a note about the Truth Behind the Tale. Not adding a bibliography or source materials is a missed opportunity, but this fast-paced title makes this time period and event feel relevant and exciting.
VERDICT Purchase where readers devour the “I Survived” series by Lauren Tarshis.
