PreS-Gr 3–When all the world’s basketballs suddenly stop bouncing, the matter is taken up in the space-age Basketball Headquarters, where the commissioner duly summons the world-famous dunking baby, Baby Dunks-a-Lot, the only person who can save the game. Donning a suit that can spray a noxious liquid scented like old basketball shoes, the Black baby travels via the Ball-mobile to the Bad Guys’ scary castle, where he’s quickly trapped and taken prisoner by Gorbon, the evil leader. Following a two-on-two basketball matchup, handily won by the good guys after henchman Lil Gorbi misplaces a magic basketball, the baby is able to jump to a highly placed lever and remove the curse placed by Gorbon. Text and story are minimal. Pages are mostly taken up with dynamic illustrations of the action, some broken up into comic panels. Game play is depicted, especially of Baby Dunks-a-Lot soaring above the rim, but there is no description of play or sports terminology.
VERDICT Full of corny humor, absurd situations, stilted dialogue, and (a little bit of) basketball, this faux-futuristic adventure with a sports twist may appeal to sports-loving families.
