Children will relate to this story of a mouse finding great fascination in items belonging to parents. The mixed-media illustration, spare design, and predictable pattern to the text are just right for young listeners, with words and visuals working hand in hand. On one page, Bella beats her drum: "My drum is good…" [page turn] "Mommy's are better," with Bella shown beating on pots and pans. Tension is introduced with the loss of Kitty, but there's a quick resolution thanks to her mom, prompting Bella to say, "Mommy's stuff is good…. But Kitty is the best of all."
VERDICT A pleasing title that will resonate with many preschoolers.
