Gr 1-4–From the creators of Girl Dad, this title has a rhyming narrative running under scenes of a variety of Black fathers and their sons engaged in domestic activities (such as house-painting), having adventures in the wilderness (like fishing), on the football field, or at the head of the table where there are elders present. The fathers are diversely depicted sporting crew cuts, locs, faded 'fros, even wearing do-rags to maintain their waves at bedtime. This works as well as the previous book and is wonderful for sharing in units on family. The dynamic illustrations are vibrant, expressing warmth between family members, engagement, and a broad range of settings to make all children feel seen and included.
VERDICT A picture book that depicts beautiful fathers in a nuanced way that is great for sharing one-on-one or in the classroom.
