Gr 3–6—Heart-melting photos of cute animals, with loads of information, pack these agenda-driven books.
Dogs and
Cats briefly cover the history of their respective subjects and discuss how to choose, look after, and understand them.
Small Animals and
Farm Animals contain overviews of the history of domestication before dividing their chapters into specific animal groups such as "Feathered Friends" and livestock. The overall goal of this collection is to promote humane treatment and encourage adoption of rescue pets. Each title explains that a portion of the proceeds will go to a rescue shelter. With the exception of Cats, each volume lists books and websites for further study. This set is a mixed bag: some of the sources are geared more toward adults, and several sources are underwhelming choices (Wikihow).
VERDICT With a lot of material for such slender offerings, these books serve as decent enough introductions to responsible pet adoption and care.
