Lisa T. Bergren expertly weaves elements of historical fiction, romance, Christian fiction, and time travel into a cohesive story. Her knowledge of medieval Italian history, politics, and culture is detailed, from the political intrigue and treachery that marked the time period to the customs to which society adhered. In direct opposition to 14th-century expectations is Bergren’s depiction of the Bettarini women, who are confident, resourceful, and courageous. Whether deftly wielding swords and daggers or using the bow and arrow with deadly accuracy, Gabi and Lia are formidable warriors who fight side-by-side with the men of Sienna. Although strong character development and non-stop action move the story line forward, it’s the swoon-worthy romance, based on sacrifice and faith, between Gabi and Marcello that truly serves as the backbone of the book.
