Gr 7 Up—Two well-written and deeply inspiring biographies of individuals who have devoted their lives to the struggle for human rights. Bonhoeffer was a theologian who was among the very few German Christians to stand against the atrocities perpetrated against the Jewish people in Europe during the 1930s and '40s, and Suu Kyi was forced to remain a prisoner in her own home for 15 years by the military leaders for seeking democracy in Burma. Both Martin and O'Keefe write about their subjects with unbiased candor, leaving room for readers to form their own ideas about the events and actions that led to some of the defining moments faced by these two courageous people. Each title includes a thorough bibliography and source citations as well as clear, relevant photos. These volumes are wonderful resources for all libraries, shedding light on human-rights heroes who may be unfamiliar to most teens.—Sara Saxton, Wasilla Meta-Rose Public Library, Wasilla, AK
Color and black-and-white archival photographs (often poorly reproduced), maps, and sidebars combine with a comprehensive text to present an accessible chronological biography of each notable activist. First-hand accounts, drawn from a variety of sources, lend an authentic voice, while the discussion of historical events and figures provides the political and historical contexts that motivated such determination and sacrifice. Timeline, websites. Bib., ind. Review covers these Champion on Freedom titles: Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Nelson Mandela.
