PreS-Gr 2–In bold graphics that are often little more than a shape or just two eyes on a black page, Lot announces on the title page that “this book has a twist—turn it clockwise and read it vertically!” So begins a funny and surprising adventure akin to Hervé Tullet’s
Press Here. In this story, an unknown creature doesn’t want to show itself and feels comfortable in the darkness. With the help of readers, the narrator tries to encourage the creature to “come on out” by shaking and twisting the book—perhaps not the kindest way. However, in the end, the narrator shows compassion and empathy to the creature, and with encouraging words and phrases that readers are meant to call out, the creature is coaxed out, revealing that it is a rabbit being pulled out of a magician’s top hat.
VERDICT This engaging picture book breaks the fourth wall for young readers in an accessible way, inviting them to be part of the story as it unfolds.
