Gr 7-10–This nonfiction graphic novel acts as both a paean to the art of writing, and an instruction manual filled with tips and tricks for reluctant writers. LaFille’s lush and vibrant watercolor artwork supports McIerney’s text, playing with panel size to keep a sense of movement through what might otherwise feel like an abstract topic. McIerney writes in detail about her own creative process and often uses metaphor connected to other creative disciplines to demonstrate her points. The graphic novel’s greatest treat, however, is its full-page panels, which often feature colorful illustrations of a variety of ideas spiraling outward from a writer or pen. McInerney’s observations and suggestions always encourage process over perfection and occasionally include sample poems from her own past students as examples. Her inclusion of practices like spiral writing and full-senses writing make this graphic a useful educational tool. A great fit for school librarians who collaborate closely with English teachers at their respective schools.
VERDICT An educational tool in an accessible format, and an excellent buy for librarians who collaborate with English teachers.
