Gr 1-4–In this second installment to the “A Modern Fairy-Tale” series, Curlilocks goes to great lengths to get a new hairdo in time for her school’s picture day. Comparing herself to classmates Gretel, Alice, and Red, Curliocks thinks her hair is too curly, boingy, and floppy. Despite her mother’s warning that the predicted rain will spoil any new haircut, Curlilocks goes to the Three Hares Hair Salon for her makeover. When they aren’t there, Curlilocks enters the salon and makes a mess! This is a very clever twist on the classic Goldilocks fairy tale. While the text is crafted for younger readers, older students will appreciate comparing the similarities and differences between this story and the original. The chapters are short, the text big, and Dolby’s bright illustrations featured on each page bring the actions to life. Curlilocks is cued white as are Alice and Red; Gretel is shown with dark skin and hair.
VERDICT A fun tale that will appeal to reluctant readers and fans of fractured fairy tales.
