K-Gr 2–This collection of five LEGO Jurassic World stories follows the daily workings and misadventures of the theme park located on the island of Isla Nubar. Whether the high-stakes drama is caused by the ambitious plans of park owner Simon Masrani, malfunctioning equipment, interfering interlopers, or a lost baby triceratops, everything works out okay in the end. The hero throughout is animal behaviorist and raptor trainer Owen Grady, who seems to be the only one keeping the park together (though sometimes he has help). The book ends with a section, “The Dinosaurs and People of Jurassic World,” which puzzlingly mentions characters not included in the text, such as Dr. Wu, and leaves out those that are, like the Allosaurus. When read together, the stories feel a bit formulaic; for example, the Pteranodons get out of their enclosure in three of the stories. However, predictability helps develop confidence in emerging readers, so it’s not necessarily a drawback. The reliable placement of illustrations on the top or bottom of each page, with the black text set against a white background, also helps set readers up for success.
VERDICT While not groundbreaking, these stories will find readers among both LEGO and dinosaur fans alike. An additional purchase.
