Gr 5-7–When Count Dracula returns to Transylvania after a six-month world tour, he finds that everything has changed. All the progress he made in building trust and connection between humans and vampires has been undone. The blood orange jelly—and even the blood oranges themselves—have vanished. Strange new vampires appear, and everyone seems to be turning against Count Dracula. He must not only set things right but also unravel the mystery behind these strange events. The story strikes a perfect balance between humor and suspense. Its silliness will have young readers laughing, while the unfolding mystery will keep them eagerly turning pages. The artwork features dark tones that evoke the classic gloom of vampire tales, but it avoids becoming too intense for young readers. Pops of color—pink donuts and fuzzy slippers, and of course, red blood—add charm and contrast, complementing the cartoon style.
VERDICT A delightful addition to the middle grade-friendly collection of vampire titles.
