Gr 3–6—Cook is a master of drafting adorable drawings, and this book shows young artists how to copy her style, from animals to holiday symbols. Most objects are based on basic shapes, and the text is encouraging to artists who may stumble with some of the more challenging steps. For instance, the directions for illustrating a soccer ball end in quitting, and throughout the book Cook recognizes that readers may find some of the items difficult to portray and makes jokes out of the mistakes. The instructions Cook includes for each illustration are lighthearted and silly, which complement her style and enhance the already cheerful book. Irreverent "protips" pepper the sections. Each final image is colored, but instructions for coloring are not included.
VERDICT Recommended for collection where drawing books and cutesy graphic novels are popular.
