K-Gr 2–The Spanish edition of the 2022 picture book
The Boy with Flowers in His Hair by the same author/illustrator is a story of friendship and helping others when they need it the most. The book’s narrator has a best friend named David who has colorful flowers growing out of his head. The friends play together, are in the same class, and David’s best friend even waters the flowers in David’s hair. One day, David arrives at school reserved and sad. When the teacher asks everyone to remove their coats and hats, the entire class sees why David is sad. His flowers have begun to die, and soon there are only bare stems left. They start to treat him differently. David’s best friend comes up with an idea to cheer up David and soon the other kids help as well. The children depicted in the book are racially diverse and have different physical abilities. The illustrations are colorful, and the concept is easy to understand for younger kids. This is a good book for parents to read with their children who are experiencing an illness or loss or to teach empathy. David has white skin, and the narrator has tan skin.
VERDICT This book provides a gentle way to explain loss or illness and should be on every bookshelf.
