El sueño de Claudia

PreS-Gr 2–Claudia the elephant rubs her magic lamp and out pops a genie giraffe! Claudia automatically believes the genie is a boy, but is gently corrected by the giraffe. The pachyderm wonders, why is it that so many stories portray genies as male? Claudia wishes to travel to a fantasy world, and as she and the genie travel, they come across a variety of characters who take Claudia to incredible places. A dragon flies to the future, a robot takes them to Mars, an alien whisks them back to the time of the dinosaurs. Each time, Claudia automatically thinks her new friends are male, when they are female. As Claudia wakes from her magical dream, she continues to wonder why in stories and science books these characters are usually male. Claudia’s marvelous and whimsical journey through time and space is depicted lovingly in soft, yet colorful, tones. Each of Claudia’s interactions with her new friends is similar, and yet each will awaken readers to the truth of Claudia’s words. This beautiful picture book will leave readers young and old wondering about the characters they meet and those they know—how they think of them and why.
