PreS-Gr 2—A sweet story about the relationship between a grandfather and grandson and about the inside jokes and shared memories that make a family. Elmer, the beloved patchwork elephant, embarks on a trip to visit his aging grandpa, Eldo. After bringing him his favorite food, Elmer asks Grandpa Eldo if he remembers all the fun things they did the last time they were together. Grandpa feigns forgetfulness so that Elmer will lead the way. Their adventures include playing tricks on each other, skipping rocks, and telling stories. Elmer is dismayed when he realizes Grandpa has indeed remembered everything, but Grandpa just laughs and confides that he's most happy that Elmer remembers to visit him. McKee's illustrations are as colorful and carefree as his story line, though adult readers will pick up the more nuanced theme of an aging grandparent's memory.
VERDICT Elmer fans will be delighted with this new offering.
