Gr 2-5–This book presents itself as a manual for understanding the different types of families. They range from families people are born into, including nuclear units; chosen families, including aunt-like figures who are always ready to help; family pets; and future families. The irreverent tone creatively presents different family dynamics and makeup, and ends with everyone at the table. Although there’s an emphasis on the diversity of family types, the majority of the characters are white. Advanced terms are used throughout, such as congeners for relatives instead of the more commonly used parientes. The book’s illustrative style and focus would appeal to a young audience, but the vocabulary and depth of thought would make this appropriate for older readers.
VERDICT Not recommended.
