PreS–A shaggy and disheveled stray dog is roaming the streets, looking for squirrels to chase and people to snarl at, when animal control shows up and brings the wanderer to the shelter. Upon the dog’s arrival at the shelter, care takes place immediately in the form of vaccinations, a bath and grooming, and a spritz of fur freshener. Many days pass without an adopter for the pup, until a little girl appears to be interested in the dog. It’s love at first sight for both the girl and the dog, so the new canine family member is joyfully adopted. An author’s note at the end of the book explains that most families who rescue a pet don’t know the pet’s actual birthday, so they celebrate with a “gotcha day,” the day the pet joined their family. Each page bears no more than five words in Kerbel’s story told completely in rhyme (e.g., “Washed, brushed, groomed, perfumed. Leashed, led, fed, bed.”) Lugo’s illustrations fill every page, with bright colors and perfect expressions that are sure to attract even the youngest readers. Skin tones vary among the people depicted. This story is certain to be reread many times by adoring fans.
