K-Gr 3–When he goes to visit Grandma, Kid (as Grandma calls him) knows the visit comes with a whole host of rules. Some rules make sense, like using a tablecloth and an apron when being messy, but some just plain confound Kid: Why not touch the porcelain dogs or the large blue-and-white vase? When Grandma leaves for a bit of shopping, Kid (and the ever-present gray cat) try to play one of Grandma’s games, but one thing after another begins to go wrong. Grandma arrives home to a complete shambles. What will happen to Kid next? Both characters are white, but while the story lacks diversity, young readers can still make personal connections to their own family “rules.”
VERDICT A relatable and heartwarming story that shows, through hilarious watercolor illustrations, why rules are meant to be broken.
