Persephone is the focus and rather than simply being a victim, as she is often portrayed, here she is empowered by her role as Queen of the Dead. O’Connor’s vision of the Greek underworld is rendered beautifully and with precision. Figures including Cerberus, Ixion, and Sisyphus create a sense of melancholy and dejection. Demeter is presented as overprotective and quick to anger, making Persephone’s rebellion understandable.
