PreS—Milo, a mouse, wants to prepare a surprise for his rabbit friend Lily's birthday. He starts by decorating the house. "Milo finds a green and red Christmas garland, a string of bright little flags, and two big balloons. Which decorations are right for Lily's birthday party?" On the next page, the clear, black text states, "Milo chooses the flags and the balloons." Illustrations are similarly cheerful and clear. The sweet, endearing expressions of the animals are reminiscent of those found in Lucy Cousins's "Maisy" books (Candlewick). Children who like definitive choices may be frustrated by Milo inconsistently choosing one or two options. And those who want creative freedom might be disappointed by "correct" answers. But all of the choices will be familiar to preschoolers, and one-on-one sharing will offer rich and appropriate topics for conversation. Lily's delight at her surprise and the warmth and affection between the two friends will make all youngsters smile.—
