Gr 8 Up–In 17-year-old Yang Mina’s world, descendants of the Japanese dragon gods, who look human but carry dragon blood, are sent to save human lives by traveling through time and altering and repairing the timeline. Mina lives in Seoul with her parents, who also work for the descendants. Her parents’ jobs keep them moving between Korea and Japan, making Mina’s home life unstable, so she chooses to train for a permanent job that will keep her in Korea. Mina embarks on time travel with a mentor who teaches her the ropes and expects her to follow the rules set by the agency. But when she learns that she has a sister who has been erased, Mina decides that finding her sibling is more important than being rule-abiding. Food plays an important role in the story as Kim Yejun, a rogue agent who Mina hopes will help her find the answers she craves, uses cheesecake and other Korean delicacies to entice Mina to trust him. Time travel and mild romance, which are the overarching themes in the story, are on a repetitive cycle here, and Mina’s romantic bent toward Yejun bounces back and forth so often as she tries to decide if he is trustworthy that readers’ heads will spin.
VERDICT This is a secondary purchase but may appeal to fans of Korean graphic novels.
