Gr 8 Up–Schroeder takes readers to the land of Indel where art is valued above all, foreigners are not welcome, and a dangerous Quest is about to begin. Yosarai dreams of being an illuminary, an artist of words and pictures, like her mother. On her journey to the capital for advanced schooling Yosarai meets Saunders. Saunders is really the Crown Prince Xander of Egdon. As Yosarai and Xander develop a friendship, they decide to form a team and join the Kolchan Quest with hopes of winning the prize. Their unusual crew includes Yosarai, Xander (a foreigner), Massard (Xander’s protector), Rivka (Yosarai’s maid and a menial), Jamarde (Yosarai’s younger cousin), and Estelle (a mixer and niece of an inventor). Each member brings unique strengths, but can this group win the Quest? Although Schroeder’s worldbuilding focuses more on the culture of the people, readers will still feel immersed in this land and the Quest. The novel touches on deep topics, such as a person’s purpose, honesty, generosity, and faith. The Sustainer or deity of the Indeli people is reminiscent of God, and readers will find the characters grappling with their faith. The long chapters may feel daunting to some readers; however, the action and relationships will sustain interest.
VERDICT This fantastical novel of misfits on a Quest literally and figuratively will entice readers in middle school and beyond. The cliff-hanger ending will have readers anticipating the sequel.
