Toddler-PreS—Dinosaur is back, and this time he is hungry! Designed in the identical style as
I'm a Dirty Dinosaur (Kane Miller, 2013), this story will delight toddlers and preschoolers with its rhythmic text and whimsical line drawings. As the hungry dinosaur bakes a cake, each step is spelled out in large, bold multicolored text, creating a reading chant for read-alouds and storytime sessions. "Shake, Shake,/Stir, Stir,/Make a cake/that's yum!" Illustrations are rendered in watercolor, magic pencil, and chocolate frosting. Ample white space creates a balance between text and pictures. There is also a small bird in most of the illustrations that helps Dinosaur with his cake. "I'm a hungry dinosaur/with cake mix for the pan./I'll tip it in and pat it down/and smooth it best I can." The endpapers provide the beginning and ending as readers meet a dinosaur putting on his apron ready to bake a cake. They end with Dinosaur and the bird watching another cake in the oven. Sturdy pages make this purchase good for little hands and ideal for board book or picture book collections.
VERDICT A playful addition. Dinosaur fans will frolic to the beat in this baking adventure.
