Gr 2-4–It’s a busy day down in the woods, where readers will be enchanted with how the woodland creatures work as a community in which townsfolk have jobs, like the owl who is a professor and shopkeepers who are squirrels and bunnies. A deeper dive into each neck of the woods is met with a poem and look-and-find illustrations. The warm artwork and delightful verses that typically follow the ABCB form make for an almost modern version of classic Richard Scarry look-and-find reads. Along with each entry giving an anchor to the section of town and the featured animals, such as the bunnies and their bakery or the fox’s hospital, there are more details presented that do not rhyme but have accompanying illustrations. There are also about five spreads with a poem interspersed by several smaller illustrations. Back matter includes a “What does a busy day look like for you?” where young readers are invited to ask their grown-ups questions about their busy day or about some of the professions featured in real life.
VERDICT An excellent purchase for elementary library collections where poetry and interactive look-and-find texts are popular.
